Pune: A 61-year-old diabetic woman was spared from a major foot amputation after doctors at Ruby Hall Clinic, Sassoon Road, performed Pune’s first Jetstream Atherectomy on August 9, 2025.
The advanced, minimally invasive 45-minute procedure successfully restored blood circulation in her leg, which had been threatened by a severe non-healing diabetic foot ulcer and a fully blocked superficial femoral artery (SFA) with calcified plaque.
On her admission on July 29, 2025, the patient presented with a painful ulcer that refused to heal. Tests revealed a completely blocked SFA due to rock-hard calcium deposits, making traditional angioplasty or stenting ineffective. After careful evaluation, the medical team chose the Jetstream Atherectomy device, designed to safely break down heavily calcified blockages.

The procedure was conducted in Ruby Hall Clinic’s Bi-Plane Cath Lab. Immediately after treatment, the patient experienced significant relief as blood flow was re-established, allowing the ulcer to heal naturally and eliminating the need for amputation. She was discharged on August 14, 2025, continuing her recovery with her limb intact.
Dr Yadav Munde, Chief Interventional Radiologist at Ruby Hall Clinic, explained: “This was not a routine blockage – the artery was rock-hard due to calcium. In such cases, balloons or stents alone cannot reopen the vessel. The Jetstream Atherectomy device enabled us to safely remove the calcified deposits, restore circulation, and save her limb.”
Dr Purvez Grant, Chief Cardiologist and Chairman & Managing Trustee, Ruby Hall Clinic, added: “Peripheral artery disease is very common among diabetics and often leads to ulcers or gangrene. The availability of Jetstream Atherectomy in Pune is a breakthrough. It allows us to treat cases once considered untreatable, prevent amputations, and improve both quality of life and longevity.”
Jetstream Atherectomy: Understanding Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)
Peripheral artery disease occurs when arteries supplying blood to the legs narrow due to plaque build-up. In diabetic patients, these blockages are often worsened by calcification, making treatment challenging. If untreated, PAD can progress to gangrene and limb loss. The successful introduction of Jetstream Atherectomy in Pune highlights a new option for saving limbs in complex PAD cases.
